X-Studio: Sci Fi & Contemporary Art

PSAM 3702, CRN 3303

This course will focus on the role of science fiction in contemporary art. The goal of the course is to develop new works inspired by or using ideas from the assigned readings and screenings. Projects will be largely self-directed and open to students with the prerequisite of intermediate or advanced studio coursework in at least one visual medium, ie photography, video, sculpture, painting, drawing, etc. As points of reference for making artworks we will read Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, selections from Donna Haraway’s Simians, Cyborgs and Women, Sara Cohen Shabot’s, Grotesque Bodies: A Response to Disembodied Cyborgs, and Octavia Butler’s Blood Child. And we will watch the films’s Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, The Matrix, Interstellar, and Dune. We will also look at examples of artists influenced by science fiction, such as Lee Bul, Wangechi Mutu, Matthew Barney, Zaha Hadid, Huma Bhabah, Suzanne Anker and Alice Aycock

Prerequisite: Core Studio 1: 2D, 3D, 4D or 2000 level studio course
