You are invited to apply to participate in an intensive workshop sited in Sao Paulo from September 15-21 as part of Theory of Urban Form. The results of the workshop and course will be part of the exhibition Parallel Cases II – Smart Cities as part of the main program of the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam: Making City which will open at the Netherlands Architecture Institute in April 2012.

The workshop will be hosted by Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, Sao Paulo, and will include the participation of the Department of Urbanisms, Academy of Architecture, Amsterdam School of the Arts. A Parsons cross-school team will be well positioned to critically contribute to this call that requests projects which are multidisciplinary and crosses the boundary of the traditional urban professions. We will be working on cross-disciplinary design solutions on questions of urban mobility, water, social inclusion, and ecological transformation. The methodologies will be broadly based across art, media, design practices, but specified through the lens investigating the impact of new smart sensing, monitoring, communication and social networking technologies.

The objective of Smart Cities: Sao Paulo, New York and Amsterdam aims to bring together students and faculty from the three cities in order to develop and test these interdisciplinary art, media, and design practices for achieving new strategies for living together within the limited resources in intensely urbanized areas through multiple avenues of creative engagement. We redefine Smart Cities as arrived at not only through new smart technologies, but more importantly by the face-to-face social contact of students from three continents working together.

The workshop will be led by Brian McGrath, Victoria Marshall and Jane Pirone from Parsons, Carlos Leite from Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, Sao Paulo, and Juliette van der Meijden and Rogier van den Berg at Academy of Architecture, Amsterdam School of the Arts.
