Parsons Sweeps the Amazon Fashion Studio Sessions Competition!
This past Saturday, ten students from Parsons (three from the School of Art, Media and Technology and seven from the School of Fashion) competed against SVA, Pratt, and FIT to conceive of, create, produce and present a complete fashion editorial in just 8 hours.
After an intense, all-day session of styling, conceptualizing and photographing at Amazon’s sprawling new 40,000-square-foot fashion photography studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the heat really turned up in the last hour, when it it came down to creating the single editorial page that would be the basis for judging each team.
Both the Parsons menswear and womenswear teams produced, far and away, the best pages–and the stellar panel of industry-experts didn’t hesitate to agree! Parsons took it all: $25,000 for each team and $50,000 to Parsons! The students will also receive a mentoring session with Cathy Beaudoin, President of Amazon Fashion; Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA; and Andrew Rosen, founder and president of Theory.

We believe that the Parsons commitment to inter-disciplinary collaboration, which is reflected in the structure of our curriculum–allowing for students to take courses across programs and across schools underneath The New School umbrella, undoubtedly contributed to our win. Our students know how to combine their skills into awesome design collaborations, and that really showed during this competition. It is also telling to note that the theme of global exploration worked its way into both teams’ editorials, though the teams worked completely separately and independently of each other. Parsons prides itself on our international campus and global outlook, so it was nice to see this translated into our students’ designs.
Thanks so much to Amazon Fashion, and to the amazing panel of judges: retailer and designer Steven Alan; Eva Chen, Lucky magazine editor in chief; fashion consultant Julie Gilhart; Council of Fashion Designers of America chief executive officer Steven Kolb; Derek Lam; Dennis Leggett, chief creative officer of Amazon Fashion; Mazdack Rassi, cofounder and creative director of Milk; Tracy Reese, and model Elettra Wiedemann.
