Sunday’s Parsons Festival kick-off performance, “The Future of Orchestral Garments,” was a gala affair, with sights and sounds exemplifying the best in collaboration! The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director, Marin Alsop, had challenged students from Parsons and Mannes College The New School for Music to reimagine the future of orchestral performance. The resulting work harmonized music, fashion and technology, with wearable technology designed by Design and Technology students incorporated into several of the looks–demonstrating how performance can be enhanced by new means of visual expression, with the garments and performance space itself serving as a canvas for motion and sound-activated digital projections. Last night’s MFA DT exhibition opening was a wondrous mashup of everything from phone/iPad apps and video game demos to convertible furniture to innovative ways of projecting and presenting new media.
