The New Foundation Seattle presents Travels on a Slender Thread, an exhibition of new and recent work by Andrea Geyer, curated by Kristan Kennedy.

Travels on a Slender Thread is comprised of three recent projects: a 16mm film transferred to video, five works on paper, and eight color photographs. Based on Geyer’s recent research into Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and the reopening of the Whitney Museum with a collection-focused exhibition of American Art, Geyer describes this new work as a “rupture in time,” in institutional time, material time, and lived time. The performative gestures within Geyer’s work—materialized in language, bodies, and objects—are aimed to encourage a re-visiting, re-listening, and re-recognizing of the intersection of institution and community, culture and politics, as well as experience and memory.

Kennedy says: “It is particularly salient that both the artist and myself have the opportunity to present this exhibition at The New Foundation Seattle. Together we explore what it means to hold up culture with idealistic fervor, radical gestures of support, and the creation of new art in new institutions creating a space where artists, philanthropists, audience, and the ideas of our time converge.”

Andrea Geyer’s work addresses the construction of time in the intersection of politics, culture, and history. With a particular focus on women, her work engages specifically potent situations, events, and conditions that invite collective reflection on the politics and ideologies of temporal translations as well as historical and contemporary omittances. The work aims to activate the lingering potentials that lie in the complex economy of time using methodologies of performance, theater, journalism, and poetry. Exhibitions include: MoMA/New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art/New York; Artists Space/New York; REDCAT/Los Angeles; Tate Modern/London; Serpentine Gallery/London; Generali Foundation/Vienna; Secession/Vienna; Witte De With/Rotterdam; the Turin Biennale/Italy; Athens Biennale/Greece; and documenta12/Kassel. She is represented by Galerie Thomas Zander/Cologne. Books include History is Ours (with Sharon Hayes), 2009, Kehrer/Nürnberg; The Queen of the Artists’ Studios: The Story of Audrey Munson, 2007, Art In General/New York; and Spiral Lands/Chapter 1, 2008, Koenig Books/London. andreageyer.info
