Basim Magdy was born in Assiut, Egypt in 1977. He currently lives and works in Basel, Switzerland and Cairo.

His work has recently appeared in group and solo shows at SeMa -MediaCity Seoul Biennial, Seoul; Lothringer 13 Kunsthalle, Munich; CRAC Alsace, Altkirch, France; Trafo House for Contemporary Art, Budapest; Centre d’art Passerelle, Brest, France; State of Concept, Athens (2014); The High Line, New York; 13th Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul; Biennale Jogja XII, Yogyakarta, Indonesia; Picha Recontre, Lubumbashi Biennial, DR Congo; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Sharjah Biennial 11, Sharjah, UAE (2013); La TriennalePalais de Tokyo, Paris; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2012).

Selected film screenings include Film Festival Rotterdam (2012), and Tate Modern (2013). In 2012 he was shortlisted for the second edition of the Future Generation Art Prize, Pinchuk Art Centre and in 2014 he won the Abraaj Art Prize, Dubai. Selected upcoming shows in 2014 include La Biennale de Montreal and Art in General, New York.

The Visiting Artists Lecture Series is sponsored by the School of Art, Media, and Technology (AMT) at Parsons The New School for Design. The lecture series invites renowned artists from across the globe to give free public presentations each Wednesday.
