A Bowery Residence Brings Four One and Two Person Shows to Lower East Side

LIVELIVE Presents and Standard Practice are excited to announce A Bowery Residence, a series of four one and two-person exhibitions in New York City’s Lower East Side, curated by Jessie English with support from lead artist Mark John Smith.

“In an increasingly competitive and unnavigable commercial landscape, the impetus is on artists to create their own playing field and take over spaces in which to have their discussions, to create exposure. Rather than engage in competition, the new wave of artists has to band together to find a voice. For this residence I asked artists who are seeking some sense of authenticity and identity in the data stream to present works about what that search could be. Some look to the proliferation of their image, some look to atavistic practices to reconnect with things they feel we have lost, some sort through the racial and societal tropes to find themselves. Each are uniquely interested in what the formation of an identity looks like in a hyper accelerated present. ” – Jessie English

“The mode of art making now has been so far removed from its origins, quite frankly, it is rather sad. The system as-is fights to pit artist against artist, fostering attention on that of the singular. Now is the time for a more adaptive and accommodating model, a more equitable system founded in discourse and collaboration, one designed to foster and nurture creative talent and discourse. Drawing on my experience in creating a world’s first and critically acclaimed arts engagement project for the London 2012 Olympics, the LIVELIVE Project, and as an artist invested in open and free access to culture, I am both delighted and excited to provide a new space for dialogue between public and artist. Let the conversations begin. Jessie and I invite the public to attend these nights as we join forces with our peers in promoting a second reading of our current time and future trajectory. Naturally, all events are free to attend and no RSVP is required” – Mark John Smith
